加藤：なぜ、事件数は減っているのに殺人報道は増えているんでしょう？

池上：殺人事件の取材報道がマスコミにとって一番楽だからです。現在、民放を中心に、ニュース番組の時間枠がどんどん拡大しています。芸能人を起用したコストのかかる番組の代わりに、予算のわりに視聴率が見込める、という理由からです。

　でも、報道記者やニュースに強いディレクターが増えるわけではない。そんなとき、殺人事件報道ほど、注目を集めやすく、かつ取材が楽なものはない。事件の概要は警察が全部発表してくれるし、容疑者や被害者の写真も貰える。カメラマンを現場に出せば、とりあえず現場の映像が撮れる。マイクを向ければ、近所の人は「怖いですね」と言ってくれる。あっという間に5～6分の報道が一丁上がり、なんですよ。
